On April 17, 1917, Alabama Beta brother Jack C. Hughston, '38, Bond# 613, was born in Florence, Alabama. Jack Hughston made Columbus, Georgia, his home and attended Columbus High School and Riverside Military Academy. After graduating from Auburn in 1938, he earned his medical degree from LSU in 1943. After serving in the military, and working in New Orleans and Greenville, South Carolina, he returned to Columbus to marry Sarah Hardaway and establish the Hughston Clinic in 1949.
Dr. Hughston became involved with Auburn Athletics in 1952 during the time Ralph "Shug" Jordan was head football coach of Auburn University. He convinced Coach Jordan that the team needed an orthopaedist on the sideline, and he pioneered this role in college athletics. He was one of the founders of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the International Society of the Knee, serving as its president in 1983.
He had a favorite saying that epitomized his life: "When you're green, you're growin'. When you're ripe, you're next to rotten."
